When a game feels great, then quietly stops

A lot of mobile games are built to feel amazing in the first hour. Rewards come fast, everything unlocks, and you think you've found your new favorite. Then around hour five the generosity dries up and the grind sets in. This is why we never review anything after one evening.

Emberfall Chronicles is a good example of both the problem and the solution. The early chapters are tightly paced and brilliant, but the later ones lean on repetition. Knowing that going in changes how you play — you pace yourself instead of burning out.

The tell is usually how the game treats your time once the tutorial reward rush ends. If the loop still feels good when nobody's handing you unlocks every two minutes, it's a keeper.

So my advice is boring but it works: wait. Don't fall in love with a game in the first hour, and don't trust a reviewer who did. Give it a few days and see if it still wants you around.
